SPICE IT UP FOR
SUPER HEALTH
Food has always been used as medicine. We’ve all eaten chicken noodle soup to help with a cold or sipped on ginger ale for an upset stomach. They work because the herbs, spices and roots in these foods give them medicine-like traits.
Check out the health benefits of each of these herbs or spices:
• Garlic: Garlic is fantastic for reducing blood pressure. It’s also known as an antibiotic. Add two or more cloves of garlic to your dishes for the best effect.
• Cinnamon: While cinnamon is delicious in baked goods, it can also help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. This spice also has anti-inflammatory properties. Add a dash of cinnamon to coffee, lattes, smoothies or shakes.
• Rosemary: This herb adds a ton of flavor to chicken and soups, but it can also boost cognitive function, decrease drowsiness and even improve mood.
• Ginger: Ginger can help aid in nausea and stomach aches. Add ginger juice to juices and smoothies, brew ginger tea with grated ginger or offer ginger jam at breakfast.
• Chili peppers: Peppers are great for boosting metabolism and keeping blood vessels healthy. Give your food a kick by adding fresh, dried or powdered chilis to your dishes.
