Salty Snacks and Appetizers
Nothing is better than a delicious appetizer to start a meal off right. These starter ideas are salty and savory, popular with many lifestyle diets, including plant based, paleo, keto and gluten free.
• Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Palmiers: Smashed garlic slow roasted in olive oil is mixed with rosemary and red chili flakes and baked into a puff pastry. The rosemary and garlic can be switched out for other salty pairings.
• Pimiento Cheese Crackers: Sharp cheddar and spicy pimientos make for a keto-friendly cracker that tastes great on its own or as a base for your favorite toppings. Combine sharp cheddar, almond flour, jarred pimientos and butter in a food processor until a dough forms. Roll out into a log and slice after refrigerating. Bake until golden.
• Marinated Olives and Feta: These olives get their salty and briny taste from marinated feta. Combine green olives, olive oil, garlic, lemon peel and red pepper flakes in a pan and heat until the oil is golden. Remove from heat and transfer to a bowl filled with the feta. Cool. Serve with crispy bread and toothpicks for easy eating.
• Buffalo Wing Popcorn: This gameday staple takes popcorn to the next level. Create a caramel with water and sugar and add in plant-based butter, hot sauce, salt, baking soda and cayenne pepper. Add the buffalo caramel to a bowl of unflavored popcorn, toss to combine and bake at 300 degrees to get crispy clusters.
