  FOODSERVICE SPOTLIGHT: PLANTCITY
334 Water St., Providence, RI
Open since June 2019, Plant City is a plant-based food hall in Providence, RI co-founded by chef Matthew Kenney and Kim Anderson. It features four restaurants, a coffee bar, a marketplace and a community space.
This unusual eatery caters to all tastes:
• Double Zero: Pizzas, pasta, raw lasagna and more, made with farro pepperoni, mushroom Bolognese and macadamia ricotta.
• Bar Verde: Jackfruit tacos, mushroom quesadillas, cauliflower enchiladas and more all served with house-made salsas.
• Make Out: “Build-your-own-bowl” style breakfast and lunch as well as an all-day menu featuring toasts, sandwiches and wraps.
• new.burger: Burgers made with all-veg patties, salads, mac and cheese and more served with house-made burger buns and cheese.
Anderson estimates that nearly 90 percent of their customers are not familiar with a plant-based diet.
“People come not knowing what they’re going to get or are expecting salad,” Anderson said. “[The customers] are surprised by the pizzas, by the Bolognese, by the tacos.”
By making dishes that are easily recognizable to customers, it’s less intimidating for “newbies” to try them. “We want to show people that there’s great, sustainable and delicious food made without animals.”
